WHAT'S SPECIAL ABOUT  TRITIUM ?

It is a form of hydrogen, a very common element. Officially it is said to cause little harm because it emits low energy radiation. But, two key factors are ignored by the official  calculations:
*Tritium  tends to concentrate in the most vital part of the cell - the DNA
*Tritium's radioactive energy mostly goes to damaging one chromosome or gene of the cell nucleus. This may cause cancer or genetic damage.
GENETIC DAMAGE and GENOMIC INSTABILITY
Official calculations do not count the genetic damage. Radiation damage to the human egg can cause birth defects or lead to spontaneous abortion.. Eric Wright, at the British Medical Research Centre, Harwell,   has identified 'genomic instability' which means that there could be vulnerability to genetic damage in later generations.

Radioactive tritium is in Cardiff's air, waters and everyone who lives here. Radioactive tritium and carbon 14 come from the factory of  Nycomed Amersham in North Cardiff. The large amounts discharged are the highest for any populated area in Europe.
CARBON 14
This is a radioactive form of carbon which is also found by government monitoring in high quantities in the foodstuffs and sea around Cardiff.
AREN'T WE PROTECTED?
Tritium is yet another version of the BSE or Asbestos scandal. Individual scientists from all over the world, with no vested interest,  speak out , but find their views suppressed and their research dismissed by the establishment and the nuclear industry..
